Just a short walk along Main Street from our Visitor Centre is Kind Brewing, West Kelowna’s only microbrewery, which we recently had a chance to visit. Walking in past the patio outside, we were immediately met by the spacious lounge, long bar, and gorgeous view of Okanagan Lake out the many large windows. We were shortly thereafter greeted by the owner, Joe Slykerman, who offered to show us around and answer our questions.
He first brought us into the brewing room, visible behind the bar through another set of large windows, and explained that while other craft breweries focused on exotic brews and varieties, Kind made the deliberate choice to focus on “traditional styles done well”. Slykerman had previously worked in the wine industry, but over time his interest in brewing grew, and so he decided to strike out on his own in the brewery business instead. When asked if there was any deeper story to the brewery or the beer, he said that there really wasn’t one, just good beer.
The brewery had been running for about a year and a half, he explained, but only recently obtained a license to operate as a full bar and lounge rather than merely as a tasting room. This, combined with the new snack menu and, on weekends, smoker or barbecue food, makes Kind a great place even for a group to hang out. Of course, they still do offer tastings; we were offered a flight of their various brews to taste and even the less beer inclined among us found the various beers to be excellent. If a particular beer strikes your fancy, you can purchase a full growler to take home with you.
